Who We Are
We are proud to be a small, family-owned and run business.
Sam started his career in the grass industry as a grounds employee at a small golf course in Wisconsin over 25 years ago. Since then he received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Minnesota in Plant Science, worked at multiple golf courses around the world, educated and presented to audiences ranging from homeowners to professional organizations, and is quite proud of being the “go-to” guy to install the bunker camera on the iconic 17th hole at THE PLAYERS Championship when he’s gone to volunteer at the tournament. For years he has dreamt of being a sod farmer and ‘driving a tractor’ for a living.
Abby has a background in sales, marketing, and product management at various OEMs. After returning to work following her second maternity leave, Sam and Abby decided it was time for her to be done with a ‘normal’ job and start the most important job she would ever have as a full-time mom. As soon as the sod farm was purchased, all the pieces seemed to fall into place as she was able to put her business hat back on a couple days a week and help build the business while still getting to keep the growing girl squad at home. You’ll often find one or more of their little hooligans ‘helping’ at the field.
The field we use has a long history of sod. Our original business partner, Dave Sherbrooke, remembers helping his grandfather harvest sod from this field as early as age 8. His grandfather took out the first ever irrigation permit in the state of MN for a sod farm operation, making North Central Sod Minnesota’s original sod farm.
